Census Returns
Census returns of individual households are recorded every ten years and are available for viewing by the public for the years 1841 – 1891. There is a protective rule of 100 years and therefore there is no access to the census of 1901 at this point of time. Ages of people were often rounded up or down by the enumerator, so one should be aware of this fact if ages are noted to be different in other documents. Census returns bridge the gap between the statutory registers that commenced in 1855 and the Old Parish Registers that ended in 1854 and they are very useful tools of research, especially as they make note of birthplace.
